Women’s Health: Menstrual Cycle

What is a menstrual cycle?

A menstrual cycle is a women’s monthly change her body goes through in preparation for possibility of  pregnancy. Every month an egg is release and dropped down to the uterus for possible fertilization, if fertilization doesn’t happen the uterus shed its lining flowing through the vagina thus having a  menstrual cycle.

What hormones are involved in a woman’s cycle?

The menstrual cycle is regulated by four hormones. The first two are called Luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, which are produced by the pituitary gland which is a small pea-sized gland that plays a major role in growth and development and the function of other endocrine glands. These two hormones help promote ovulation and stimulate the ovaries to produce the last two hormones involved in a woman’s cycle which are estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone cause the lining of the uterus to become more thicker and stimulate breast to prepare for possible fertilization.

What to Eat durning your Menstrual Cycle?

First remove processed foods from your diet which is a really great way to promote health. Don’t forget to read the label so that you can know what your putting into your body like have you ever notice the added sugar in yogurt or granola or even your cereal bar.

Second no synthetic hormones which can come from animal products meat and dairy. Instead choose grass fed local and clean meat and dairy. Trust me without these added hormones you will notices a difference in your monthly cycle. Hormones added into foods can lead to a heavier flow, painful cramping, mood swings and sometimes can lead to ovarian cysts.

Eat your fruits and veggies which are a great source of fiber, vitamins and minerals which may help in reducing symptoms and PMS.

Let’s talk fats, fats are our friend not the enemy if we choose wisely like adding in avocado oil, olive oil and even grass fed butter these option can be very helpful when it comes to balancing female cycle. Healthy fats like omega 3s, help reduce inflammation, which can be helpful in reducing cramps and lighting up a woman’s flow.

This article came out of my own desire to understand my period. For years I’ve suffered with very painful menstrual cramps, to the point of tears and not being able to walk. I admit over the years I’ve develop a strong dislike for my period because of the pain I knew it would bring, but one day I thought if I could just get a better understanding of what my body is going through and what to eat, I might just survive this thing!

Since creating a healthier lifestyle and adopting better eating habits I have experience an reduction in menstrual cramps, I’m able to have energy throughout my cycle and overall I just feel good and all it took was a few changes and a good understanding.

I hope you enjoyed this post  let’s work together and get you eating right for your body and hormones.
